Guild workers fight artificial intelligence

AI is harming so many communities across the globe. AI’s carbon emissions and consumption of electricity and freshwater resources means higher bills and more pollution. AI bots on social media platforms are further eroding democracy. And actors from ICE to the Israeli military are using AI to disappear and kill people. 

As workers, we also face the threat of AI to our jobs and the better world we are fighting for. But CNG members are fighting back. For our media units, journalists are negotiating with their outlets about how AI can and cannot be used to both protect their own work and ensure their audiences are getting accurate news. Our nonprofit units are building campaigns alongside impacted communities to confront the tech companies and billionaires profiteering from AI. And for our staff unions organizing workers across a diversity of sectors, they have to contend with fears of AI powered surveillance and AI generated replacement.
