Arnavaz Mistry-Mujthaba serves as a Field Service Director with the Illinois Federation of Teachers. Arnavaz represents thirteen elementary and high school collective bargaining units in West Suburban Cook and DuPage Counties within the West Suburban Teachers Union, Local 571. Her responsibilities include collective bargaining, grievance administration, and handling day-to-day personnel issues on behalf of teachers and paraprofessionals. Prior to her ten years with the Illinois Federation of Teachers, Arnavaz spent thirteen years teaching high school chemistry, biology and physical science at Leyden High School District 212. Arnavaz also served as the Union president for two of her years at Leyden.
Arnavaz has been an officer within the Illinois Organizers Union since 2005. Initially, she served as secretary and now serves as treasurer. She has been at the table during the bargaining of three agreements between the Illinois Federation of Teachers and the Illinois Organizers Union. She has also assisted in the defense of members’ rights during her time as an officer.
Arnavaz has a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from Mississippi State University and a Master of Science degree in Education and Social Policy from Northwestern University.
Arnavaz, her husband, Mujey, and their two cats currently reside in Wadsworth, Illinois but also enjoy vacationing at their family home in her husband’s homeland, the Maldives, when time permits. Arnavaz enjoys reading, gardening, knitting, travel and scuba diving.
